Vintage aerial photography

From late 1935 to early 1936, the RAAF undertook the first complete aerial survey of Adelaide. For the first time ever, this aerial photography is now available fully orthorectified and in digital format. Using unique processing techniques, Spatial Scientific Technologies Pty. Ltd. has created 50cm digital orthoimages from the 1930s photography. The orthoimages have been manually mosaicked and balanced to give complete, seamless coverage.

The aerial photography covers all of metropolitan Adelaide, from Willunga and Strathalbyn in the south, to Gawler and Angaston in the north. This area comprises some eight hundred individual black and white photographs.

This photography provides a unique historical perspective of Adelaide. Its applications are as numerous and wide-ranging as modern day spatial information. Further details about the 1936 vintage aerial photography can be found in the Spatial Scientific Technologies 1936 photography flyer. Alternatively, have a look at a sample image. Note that the quality of this image has been reduced to aid downloading.
